Patio Makeover: Creating an Outdoor Oasis

Our patio has been in need of a makeover for the last five years. That’s how long we’ve been renting now. We’ve done basically nothing to our patio but make it a storage area. The kids use it most of the time, mostly to run around and play, but the hubster and I? We were basically hermits living indoors… until now. Now it’s time for a patio makeover!

Quick and easy outdoor oasis

This last weekend, we took a long hard look at our drab patio and decided on a plan. A few weekends ago, our family held a garage sale whereby we sold many, many toys, household items and baby clothes. We took the money that we made from the garage sale, and a $250 Pier 1 Imports gift card, and gave it our best shot at creating a little nook – an outdoor oasis – for the hubster and I. We surveyed our space and decided on the corner closest to our home.

Setting ourselves up closest to the entrance of our home means that we’ll use our newfound space more often. We see it as an extension of our home. Just a step outside and we have our own little space!

Before the space was empty as you see above, it contained a water cooler, a weight-lifting bench and an elliptical machine. All of that was crammed in that one little corner. It took us a couple of hours to literally take the machine apart bolt by bolt. The water cooler we moved to the side, as well as the bench. Then we got to work.

I brought out everything that we purchased at Pier 1. There was so much to choose from, when we went shopping, but ultimately we settled on some major-impact pieces.

I originally wanted the space to be bright, colorful and with a fiesta vibe. Of course, when I actually went to purchase our goodies, we strayed from that a bit. We ended up with statement accent tables that had a bit of the vibe that I wanted, but a bit subdued so that it would end up being a chill-out area too. The rug was the best item that we could have purchased… and I give all the credit to the hubster.

It clearly outlines where our space begins and ends. In fact, we’ve gone as far as to tell the kids that the rug space is ours and it’s a ball-free zone! So far, it’s working like a charm.

This outdoor rug is so great! It’s woven from acrylic fiber and treated to resist the elements. Just hose it down every once in a while to keep it looking fresh.

Our second splurge were these gorgeous sunflower mosaic accent tables.

I wanted to spend some of our budget on items that we would have for years to come, so we chose these tables. My favorite table feature are the brightly colored glass tiles. They are individually hand-cut and applied by artisans. And although they’re more Moroccan-influenced than Mexico-influenced, the colors are spot-on for our more subdued fiesta area.

Each of the tables have wrought-iron base making them ideal for outside use. They have a great weight to them and definite conversation starters. They measure 14″ in diameter and 21″ tall, so just big enough to hold some small bites, drinks and my current read. Which is just perfect because our little nook is about 9’x7′.

You might notice that one Pier 1 Imports item is missing from our patio – the outdoor clock. When we brought it home, we walked through the door and noticed that the color scheme was perfect for our living room. And because it is an indoor/outdoor clock, we decided to keep it indoors. It’s currently hanging over our sofa.

We’re completely in love with our new space. It took a few hours over the weekend and not much money to create a space that the hubster and I can enjoy on a daily basis. We’re really looking forward to shopping at Pier 1 Imports for a few decorations that will add to the space – like a wind chime, some brightly colored planters and lighting. We might take full advantage of Pier1.com and just shop online and get it delivered to the store – or our home. What’s nice is if I decide to buy a bigger piece of furniture, I can order online and have them deliver the item to my home, and even get it assembled, within one to three weeks! Gotta love convenience.

So now that I’ve shown you what I’ve done with my space, I would love to hear from you. What type of Pier 1 item would complete (or inspire) your outdoor oasis? Something bright and colorful? Maybe decor items with an oceanside feel? Or do you prefer a more natural and with subdued patterns? Let us know in the comments below.
