Eat this, not that – healthier food swaps for the holidays
The holidays are a time when everyone decides to up their cooking, baking and entertaining game making it really, really, really difficult to hang on to all the hard work that we put into our body during the Summer season. So with that, we partnered with Ruby Rockets to share four awesome food swaps that will have you looking amazing as you head into the new year.
Skip the greek yogurt, go for a Ruby Rockets pop
At 500 million CFUs per Pop, you get more probiotics per ounce in a Ruby Rockets pop than Greek yogurt. Two Ruby Rockets frozen pops (3.5oz) contain the same amount of probiotics as six ounces of yogurt. They’re also under 50 calories for each pop so you can still enjoy without breaking the calories bank.
Skip the dried fruit, go for fresh fruit
Dried fruit is heavy on sugar because it has had the water removed. In fact, half a cup of dried cranberries contain 37 grams of sugar!!! Compare that to half a cup of fresh cranberries that contain just 2 grams of sugar. Go for fresh fruit like apples and bananas that will fill you up with a lot less sugar.
Skip the mayo, go for smashed avocado
I love mayo as much as the next person, but it has all kinds of the wrong fat. Avocados are a superfood containing a wide variety of nutrients, including 20 different vitamins and minerals. They are high in monounsaturated oleic acid, a “heart healthy” fatty acid. It’s also been shown that eating avocado or avocado oil with veggies can dramatically increase the amount of antioxidants you take in.
Skip the fruit juice, go for infused water
Fruit juice has as much calories as you get in soda. It’s also heavy on sugar. When you add fresh squeezed fruit juice into water, some herbs and maybe chia seeds, your water is packed with a lot of powerful nutrients. Also, fruits are naturally rich in antioxidants, so you’ll also be consuming a variety of naturally occurring antioxidants when you drink infused water.
It’s easy to get away from the good habits you’ve created when there’s so much deliciousness around. Keep these easy food swaps in mind and you’ll be ready to go come this Summer.
