In February 2010, Univision launched a comprehensive, multi‐year national education initiative called Es El Momento (The Moment Is Now). The Es El Momento initiative is aimed at K-12 Hispanic students, specifically focusing on high school graduation and college readiness. I’m personally so glad to see that this initiative has been launched and is backed by great organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. With support like that I’m sure this initiative will get lots of attention.
As a Hispanic woman, I know how difficult it can be to get through school and make others believe that you have a chance to further yourself by going on to college. Initiatives such as this one will help Hispanics understand that there are people out there willing to help you accomplish your goals (and maybe talk some sense into certain parents who don’t understand how important college is). I remember the day I told my dad that I was going to college… his response, “Why? You’re married now.” Yes, I did get married at 18… but I didn’t do it so I could stay home and have babies. Getting my dad to understand that was yet another example of how education wasn’t valued in his family. Thankfully, I had a great mom who would constantly push me to do more and expected me to go to college. And though my dad never actually said it, I know that he was proud of me the day I received by college diploma.
