One week of healthy changes makes a difference

I wrote this blog post as part of a movement by Weight Watchers to encourage people to remember that loving yourself starts with taking care of your health everyday. Though I was compensated for my time and commitment, all views, positive and negative, are my own.

I’ve been working on losing my baby weight since… well since the second baby was born two and a half years ago. I’m 5’8″ and at a healthy 129 pounds (full transparency happening right now) but I don’t feel comfortable in my body. So while I was able to dip down to 122 pounds before, it just doesn’t seem like it’s happening again any time soon. Instead, I’ve refocused to leading a healthier lifestyle instead of just wanting to be skinny. It’s been a tough road for me because I keep pushing myself to lose just five pounds and it is super hard to do. But I’m sure that if I just keep on the road to being healthy, my mindset will change. That’s exactly why I started on this road on February 14 using activities shared by Weight Watchers Simple Start. I want to grow to love myself and my body for what it is. It’s been fun and I’ve even surprised myself!

I started by committing myself to exercise. Nothing hard core – just some running on the treadmill. My vida loca doesn’t allow me to get to the gym every day. However, having the treadmill in my home lets me schedule my workouts at my leisure. Unfortunately, that’s the tough part for me. There is always something that needs to be done before exercise so I needed to commit myself to it. Beginning February 14th until this morning, I ran a total of 14.56 miles. Some days I only managed to run a mile – but I wanted to establish a pattern. I did it! I also found that working out in the morning after dropping off the kid was the best time. If you can’t make it to the gym, or have a treadmill at your disposal, check out this sample workout from trainer David Kirsch for inspiration.

Then came the changes in my diet. I’m vegetarian, so I tend to eat a lot of cheese, bread and surprisingly, not many salads (I’m not a fan). So I started by making simple changes. I went out to Denny’s with the hubster and kids and ordered a veggie burger with a side of fruit instead of fries. That, right there, was an enormous sign of will power. I still can’t believe I was able to do that!

That little change made a big difference in me. It made me realize that an hour after I ate, I didn’t care that I didn’t have the fries. So if I didn’t miss the fries, why not keep doing it? I had that same feeling again when I stopped by a fresh fruit stand and purchased some fruit salads for the kids and I to share instead of going to our local fast food place and getting an ice cream cone and fries. These little changes made a difference.

Of course, I’m not perfect and I can’t give up all the foods I love. So come pizza night, I ordered a salad to enjoy before pizza. It made me fill up faster and I didn’t eat as much pizza as I usually do. And when we went to the theater to watch a movie, I threw in some cuties to snack on instead of popcorn and snuck in some water to drink, instead of soda. I was on a roll!

And although I have a ton of work, I made sure to get enough sleep every day (8 hours!) and I felt ready to take on the day in the morning. Now I know why it’s recommended to get plenty of sleep.

I worked pretty darn hard this week so I rewards myself by getting reading a magazine and watching my favorite movie, About Time, without any interruptions! Hubster took the kids to the park and I chilled out at home. It was amazing.
