5 Things You Must Do at SeaWorld San Diego

Thank you to our host SeaWorld for this opportunity.

Last week we visited SeaWorld San Diego for the first time ever. It was an eye-opening experience and although it was a blogger trip, I was happy to know that I could go back at any time and have the same experience. These are the 5 things you must do at SeaWorld San Diego for a full day of fun, learning, play and new experiences.

5 Things You Must Do at SeaWorld San Diego

SeaWorld Behind-the-Scenes Tour

The SeaWorld Behind-the-Scenes Tour takes you where all the action happens. This is where you see where you see how SeaWorld rescues and rehabilitates marine and terrestrial animals that are ill, injured, orphaned or abandoned, with the goal of returning them to the wild. The SeaWorld rescue team has helped more than 29,000 animals in need over the last 50 years and while we were there, we saw a couple of sea lions that were being rehabilitated. This tour will take visitors to meet with a variety of team members that will share what SeaWorld does to help the many animals from the sea, and also how we can help the animals as well. There will be lots of reminders to pick up after yourself at parks, the dangers of letting balloons and plastic bags go up into the air, and the dangers that dumping into the ocean has on these poor animals. You’ll hear some heartbreaking stories of animals that were injured by things that could have been avoided. The tour will also give you a glimpse into what it takes to run SeaWorld and you’ll see why some of the team members have been a part of SeaWorld for over 10 years. The SeaWorld Behind-the-Scenes Tour is definitely and eye opening experience… and the kids will love it!

Cost: Starting at $20

Dolphin Encounter

The Dolphin Encounter allows you to touch and feed bottlenose dolphins and learn hand signals used to communicate with them. It’s a really interactive experience so be prepared to touch and play with dolphins. During the encounter, a knowledgeable trainer will bring you close to dolphins without you having to get into the water. The kids will love giving commands to the dolphins, feeding them, and the family picture at the end of the encounter is everything.

Cost: Starting at $65

Dine with Shamu

Make a reservation before you get to the park (or while you’re there if it’s not too busy) and have lunch sitting down next to where the orcas perform. Dine with Shamu gets the opportunity to see the trainers play and feed them before the show begins. The kids also got a chance to throw snowballs to the orcas so they could munch on them. The entire experience is about an hour long, with the Shamu show being about 17 minutes long. Lunch is buffet-style and it remains open the entire show. Major bonus? The restaurants serve seafood that is sustainable, and organic and locally sourced. It’s delicious!

Cost: Starting from $40 for adults and $20 for children ages 3-9

Shark Encounter

Shark encounter is a free experience available at the park during normal operating hours. You’ll get to journey through an amazing underwater viewing tunnel (my favorite part). Before you go through the tunnel, you’ll get an up close experience with the sharks as you see them swimming around in giant tanks. It’s amazing, especially if you consider that these predators were in the sea more than a hundred million years before dinosaurs walked the earth.

Sea Lions LIVE

SeaWorld San Diego hosts a show featuring some of funniest animals, sea lions! These playful pups perform a 20 minute hilarious show, Sea Lions LIVE, that will have the whole failing roaring.

Enjoy hilarious live-action TV and music spoofs performed by SeaWorld’s® resident sea lion comedy team—Clyde and Seamore. Put on your investigator’s cap with “Sea Lion S.I.” and watch show biz dreams come true on “Dancing with the Pinnipeds!”

We had an amazing time at SeaWorld San Diego and we’re looking forward to going back next year to enjoy Orca Encounter, Ocean Explorer and Electric Ocean. Orca Encounter will be a live documentary-style presentation helping park guests gain a deeper appreciation and respect for the orcas, and empowering them to preserve the future of these majestic animals. Ocean Explorer will combine multiple aquariums, exciting rides and digital technologies designed to engage park guests in an experience centered on exploration and adventure. Finally, Electric Ocean will transform the park into an underwater world of colorful luminescence. There’s so much happening that another trip back is definitely in the cards. And if you’re visiting the park, we hope that these 5 things to do at SeaWorld San Diego will help you plan your visit.

Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival Food Guide 2017

My favorite event of the year at Knott’s Berry Farm is their annual Boysenberry Festival. This year, we had the opportunity to check out some of the food offerings at their media tasting. It was a reminder that it has come a long way since it was known as Knott’s Berry Bloom (remember back when the Boardwalk was under construction?). Anyway, we are super excited about the Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival because it features our favorite berry in every shape and form. We put together this Boysenberry Festival Food Guide that will help you navigate the park as you jump from eatery to eatery.

Boysenberry Festival Food Guide

There are a few different ways to enjoy Knott’s Berry Farm’s Boysenberry Festival. You can purchase pre-organized tastings choosing either (or both!) tasting cards – the Boysenberry Festival Tasting Cards and/or the Wine and Craft Beer Brew Garden Tasting Card. Each is $25 plus tax, and if you’re feeling frugal I would suggest you purchase one of each and share the tastings with someone.

Boysenberry Festival Tasting Cards

You’ll purchase the card and go throughout Ghost Town picking up the different plates of food. The tasting card includes generous portions of these six treats:

  • Boysenberry Pizza at Wagon Wheel Pizza
  • Boysenberry Ravioli at Spurs Chophouse
  • Boysenberry Buffalo Wings at the Gold Trails Hotel
  • Boysenberry BBQ Meatballs at the Bank of Calico
  • Boysenberry Fry Bread at the Gourmet Churro Factory
  • Boysenberry Panna Cotta at the Ghost Town Bakery

Price: $25 plus tax
Where to buy: Purchase online or at the following locations at the park: The California Store, Little Spurs, General Store, Ghost Town Candy, Gold Trails Hotel, Spurs Chophouse, Pemmican Pickle, Calico Saloon, Ghost Town Bakery, Sutter’s Grill, and Ghost Town Mix-it-up. If you purchase online, you’ll redeem the e-voucher at one of the locations where you can purchase a tasting card.

Boysenberry Festival Wine and Craft Brew Garden Tasting Cards

The Wine and Craft Brew Garden is located inside of Ghost Town’s Wilderness Dance Hall. It’s my happy place, and I love that I can bring the chiclets in there too because they have non-alcoholic treats for them too! The Wine and Craft Brew Garden will offer four craft brews (try the boysenberry cider) and over 50 different wines from 36 producers including boysenberry beer and boysenberry wine. Stop by the dance hall during the day to cool off, and return in the evening because it’s super pretty when the lights come on. Don’t miss the Snoopy-shaped topiary outside the dance hall. It’s fun and cute and will make for a great Instagram pic.

The tasting card includes six tastings paired with snacks.

Avoid accidentally working for free

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Intuit QuickBooks and #WeAllGrow Latina Network. The opinions and text are all mine.

As a blogger, one of the things we always hear is, “don’t work for free!” I get it. It takes a lot to get to the point where you’re making a full-time income out of the blog. But what about when you accidentally work for free? Well, that’s just bad business skills. So today I’m sharing a few tips on how to avoid accidentally working for free, and instead add to your bank account to keep on growing your business.

how to avoid accidentally working for free - livingmividaloca.com

How to avoid accidentally working for free

Make it clear that you’re not working for free

When you’re contact by a potential client, make sure you’re responding to them with a proposed budget. There’s no need to go into the “why” of it all, just a few sentences letting them know what a great partnership it could be, followed by your fee.

Get it in writing

Now that you have the gig, draft a contract that is legally binding to protect yourself and your pay. Intuit QuickBooks has a great article on setting up contracts. You’ll have all the basic info based on your prior communication with your client, so it won’t take too long to put it together. Also, the article I referenced has Q&A’s that will make it easy to compile.

how to avoid accidentally working for free - livingmividaloca.com

Invoice

Now that you have a contract and agreement put in place, you’ll need to invoice. A lot of times, this is where entrepreneurs drop the ball. We get so caught up on the work and getting it done on time that we forgot asking to get paid. Also, remember that unpaid invoices can have major negative impacts for a small business. And so getting your invoices paid on time can be what makes or breaks your business.

So first you’ll start off by sending an invoice. If you don’t have a personalized invoice, you can customize this Invoice Template by Intuit QuickBooks. It even allows you to add a logo. Gotta keep that brand on point!

If you have a personalized template already, you can usually title it with the date, my company name, and then the job. It makes it easy to track.

Track payments

Once invoices are sent out, you’re going to need to track payments. I use QuickBooks Online to keep track of payments because it’s a software that I’ve been using since way back when I used to sell gift baskets (and back when QuickBooks came in a CD-ROM). It’s been very helpful to use the service. You can email about 15 days after you sent the invoice, and this article will also break down the timeline to get the reminders spaced out between the follow-ups. Learn more about how you can get paid 2x faster with QuickBooks: http://intuit.me/2kQFAwS.

We all need to know to take care of ourselves and our business. That’s why I trust Intuit QuickBooks Customers, to become efficient and productive. Visit the Intuit QuickBooks Resource Center page to get a free invoice template tool, and guides/articles on strategies to get your invoices and bills paid faster, so you can keep your cash flow steady.

Schools from all over the country were invited to apply for a ScholarDollars grant last month and now the fun begins. We all get to be part of the process as we vote for schools to get one of the grants offered by ScholarShare!

How to vote: From March 1, 2017, through March 24, 2017, parents, relatives, boosters, and community supporters are encouraged to vote for their school. Top vote getters in each category (according to school size) will receive an award, to be announced in early April.

About Scholar Dollars

The Scholar Dollars grant program will award 20 grants of up to $25,000 each to eligible K-8 public and charter schools in California. Schools are free to spend the grants on musical instruments, computers, library books, sports equipment, or support enrichment programs such as tutoring labs, student counseling, science and technology and many other activities. There are two parts to the program: registration period (Feb. 1-22, 2017) and the voting period (March 1-24, 2017).

Scholar Dollars grant program

Schools have registered online at MyScholarDollars.com and applied for a grant. All registered schools appear on an online ballot, along with respective details on how each plans to use the funds if they are selected. From March 1, 2017, through March 24, 2017, parents, relatives, boosters, and community supporters are encouraged to vote for their school. Top vote getters in each category (according to school size) will receive an award, to be announced in early April.

How to vote

Voting is so easy! Just jump onto MyScholarDollars.com and scroll down. There you’ll see the schools currently in the lead. If you keep scrolling, you’ll see a search bar where you can search to see if your school participated.

ScholarShare Scholar Dollars voting period - Latina Moms OC

Once you find a school, you can click on the school name and a box will pop up with their intentions, should they win the grant. Once you find a school to vote for, click “Vote For This School” button and a box will pop up. A short form asking for your name, email address and zip code will appear and once you complete that, you’ll get an email in your inbox.

Jump over to your inbox, confirm via the email and that’s it! You can vote up to once a day until the last day, March 24th.

Unfortunately, you school did not participate in the program, so what I’m doing is finding a local school and voting for them… because when one grows, right?

p.s. I’m a big fan of ScholarShare, it’s where I have both of my kids’ 529 plan. If you’re looking to open up a college savings account for your kid(s), I highly recommend that you visit them. They’re not a broker, and you can open up an account with them with as little as $25!

Disney Cruise Tips: Fish extenders and door magnets

We took our first Disney Cruise this month as part of the Disney Social Media Moms Conference. Having never been on a Disney Cruise before I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I learned a lot, and even picked up some new terminology – like “fish extenders,” and pulled together some last-minute DIY door magnets to personalize our room. Honestly, I don’t know if I would have learned about fish extenders and door magnets for a Disney Cruise if I hadn’t of accidentally read a thread on the Disney Social Media Moms group.

What are fish extenders on a Disney cruise - LivingMiVidaLoca.com

I figured I can’t be the only one not knowing these tips, so I pulled together a few resources for you in this Disney Cruise Tips post so you can be prepared when you go onboard with your very own fish extenders and door magnets.

Fish Extenders and Door Magnets for Disney Cruise

DIY Door Magnets

The doors on the Disney Cruise ships are magnetic! So about an hour before we left for our flight I pulled together these DIY Mickey Mouse door magnets for our Disney Cruise ship door. They were super easy to pull together! I used this Mickey Mouse head template from PrintableTreats.com. They have a bunch of free templates. To access them, share the link at the bottom of the page under “Downloading and Printing” and then they’ll give you access to the templates.

Printable Mickey Mouse Head Outline - LivingMiVidaLoca.com

I printed the Mickey Mouse heads on colored card stock and then added stickers to spell out our names, some Mickey cheer with Disney-themed stickers and some cruise-themed stickers to fill in empty space. I asked the kids to help me out while we drove home to speed things up. Once the stickers were on I ran them through the Xyron Creative Station machine to laminate on one side, and add a magnetic side on the other. If I were to do it over again, I would apply a stronger magnet to the back.

Customized Disney Door Magnets

If you have time before your cruise and don’t want to make your own, you can head over to Etsy and buy some that will fit you and your family perfectly! Alluna specializes in customizable door magnets and available for download at home. A complete set is about $10. She hosts sales throughout the year so definitely keep an eye out for them. This Disney Family Cruise To Do List by Peachy Graphic is cute too. The kids loved walking down the halls looking at everyone’s door magnets.

If you forget, or don’t want to travel with your door magnets, you’ll find a few sets available for purchase at the gift shops onboard. I saw them available for about $15.

Also, I would suggest bringing along a magnetic board to place on the door as well. You can use it to engage with other cruisers onboard, asking questions like, “Yoda or Chewbacca?” and leaving a dry erase marker on the door for people to answer. The magnetic board can also be used to leave messages for your family to let them know what you’re up to during the day.

Fish Extenders on Disney Cruise

Fish Extenders

Fish extenders are a fun way to meet other cruisers and exchange gifts. The name comes from the fish located outside each door that is typically used for notes from the crew. This fish is also the perfect hook for hanging your fish extender.

How to do fish extenders on a Disney Cruise - LivingMiVidaLoca.com

Participating does take a little bit of planning as you need to find a group to join and participate in the fish extender on your cruise. Typically you’ll join a group that you find online and the size of your group will vary. If you go to the DIS Meets Board on the Disney Cruise Line Forum, you can look and see if someone has already started a Fish Extender exchange for your sailing. From there, you can start planning out your fish extender and decide if you’ll be making your own (like Dawn from ANewDawnn.com) or buying it online (visit StitchNBows – she comes highly recommended).

Fish Extender Gift Ideas

Once you figure out your fish extenders then you can focus on the gifts. You can do anything from coloring books and sunglasses, to hand sanitizers and candy. You can also choose to make your own fish extenders gifts, like these DIY Mickey Mouse keychains from TheFarmGirlGabs.com. Here are some more fish extender gift ideas:

  • a deck of playing cards
  • sand shovel
  • magnetic clips
  • Disney-themed magnets
  • magnetic dry erase boards with marker
  • mini-bubbles
  • bottles of water
  • luggage tags
  • key chains
  • glow sticks
  • stamps
  • hand sanitizer
  • sunglasses
  • tic tacs/mints
  • elastic hair bands
  • magic towels
  • sharpies
  • mini first-aid kits
  • personalized picture frames
  • earrings
  • nail polishes
  • baby wipes
  • sanitizing wipes
  • lip balm
  • mini flashlights
  • snacks
  • LEGO Disney minifigures

I hope these Disney Cruise tips featuring door magnets and fish extenders are a good jumping off point for your upcoming Disney Cruise. And if you’ve done a Disney Cruise before and have more tips for us – please leave them in the comments below. Bon voyage!
