IKEA Kid’s Room Makeover

I am a Brand Ambassadör for IKEA U.S. This is a sponsored post.

Last year I shared our new “American Dream” and I talked about how we were going to decorate our home. And it FINALLY happened (well, one room but hey – progress!) It took me a while to decide that we needed to convert a previous guest room into the chiclet’s bedroom. The IKEA kid’s room makeover was a weekend project that the Hubster and I pulled together, with the five year old helping too.

IKEA Kid's Room Makeover - LivingMiVidaLoca.com

The kid had a hand in putting together his room, from start to finish. He started by browsing the baby & kids section on the IKEA.com website and I let him create a gift guide to make it easy for us to shop. Having a shopping list before visiting the store kind of sped up the process. Of course, we still spent a fair amount of time in the kid’s section once we actually got to the store, but in all honesty the majority of it was the chiclets trying out the different room set-ups.

And have I mentioned how much we love the whole IKEA packaging. We fit ALL of it in the car. Well, that was our first trip. We went back the next day to get more accessories because we still had money in our budget and the walls were looking a little bare.

IKEA furniture inside KIA - LivingMiVIdaLoca.com

We picked up the furniture and headed home to start building everything. In all honesty, there wasn’t that much furniture to put together. The big piece, the KURA reversible bed, was the one that we were the most scared to build. I mean… the kid is going to sleep there! As it turned out, it was way easier than I thought it would be. We put the whole thing together in about two hours (keep in mind, we had a five year old “helping”). He wanted it to be loft style, so he could have room to play underneath. It turned out so cool!

IKEA Kid's Room Makeover Ideas and Tips - LivingMiVidaLoca.com

The loft bed is definitely the star of the room. It doubles as a play area underneath while he gets to sleep on the bunk above. He loves the canopy that covers the frame. We were lucky that we didn’t have to purchase another mattress. With this type of bed, you need a certain type of mattress (it can’t go above a certain height) and we had it from a previous IKEA purchase. Though if you do need to pick it up, it’s under $100!

We purchased the KURA bed tent with curtain so he could have a place to read under at night, and then he could use the little cottage set-up for make-believe stories.

Of course we had to pick up some accessories too, and that was a lot of fun. Once we had the bed set up, everything else fell into place.

We found a way to incorporate his art into his room by choosing black frames, using clothespins to hang up a few of his favorite things, and then also adding in a cute dart game that he could play with his older brother, or alone.

The chiclet also needed space for his clothes, so we picked up two RAST 3-drawer chests because it provides the most flexibility for us. We can put them together, or separate them if we want to move them around. We’ll probably end up painting them down the line, but it was way more important that we get it done that weekend so for now, they’re good.

To prepare for the years ahead, we picked up one of those clocks that look like they belong in the classroom. He likes telling time on it and he can easily have it even ten years down the line.

IKEA Kid's Room Makeover Ideas and Tips - LivingMiVidaLoca.com

We also got him a nice little organizer for his books that sits on the bed, a little more wall art to fill up empty space and a rug that he can play on.

Our last thing that we put up were the curtains. They’re light and airy and super long (which I love). They allow light to come into his room so the room looks bigger than it really is. Plus, did I mention that the lace curtains are only $4.99?

IKEA Kid's Room Makeover Ideas and Tips - LivingMiVidaLoca.com

One thing that we had to work around is the fact that our modem is housed in his room. Then there’s also my cloud storage and a few other devices that we need to keep our home running smoothly. I would love to move them out of his room someday, but for now we found the perfect workaround. We dumped them all into a STUVA storage bench and now it’s out of sight, out of mind.

We absolutely love how the room turned out. Seeing it every day reminds me of our American dream. The one that has been with me since my childhood years where I yearned to have my own room. My own piece of home that could represent me and my personality. I may not have gotten it back then, but I’m thankful that my kids are able to live it themselves.

You know that I love IKEA. Not only because they have the coolest products for your home, but also because they believe in supporting your American Dream – whatever that may be. In partnership with them, we are offering our readers the opportunity to enter for a chance to win a $500 IKEA gift card!

Spring-inspired Easter table setting

This is a sponsored post.

Growing up we never celebrated Easter in a very traditional way. Lack of extended family nearby meant that we didn’t have big family get-togethers. Because I lived through Easter without the cute gift baskets or Easter brunch, the Hubster and I decided to do things differently with the kids. The kids get a (not-too-over-the-top) Easter basket that contains one chocolate bunny and fun gifts, and we invite our family over to have lunch. This year will be no different, and that’s why our partnership with JCPenney comes at a perfect time. I shopped at our local JCPenney to put together a Spring-inspired Easter table setting that was easy AND budget-friendly.

Spring Inspired Easter Table Setting - livingmividaloca.com

I stopped by JCPenney on a weekday morning (kid free!) because I wanted to take my time and check out what they had. When family comes over we end up having way more kids and teens than adults, so I wanted to get something fun and colorful. I also wanted to get a pattern that I could use during Spring season for my own chiclets to enjoy. This 16-piece tableware set was only $30 (score!) and the colors are super fun.

I rounded out the place settings with super bright orange napkins and colorful placemats. Of course, because we have the whole family over, paper napkins are also a must.

It took just a few pieces to pull everything together and it was under $50!

Easy Easter dinner table setup - livingmividaloca.com

I tend to keep the rest of the table pretty simple because we always have more people around the dining table than we have seats – but somehow we always figure something out.

The menu doesn’t really vary because everyone ends up bringing side dishes to our main meal. Last year, we purchased a pre-seasoned pack of taco meat that we heated up and set out, buffet style. We also served salsa, cucumbers and cilantro rice. The rest of the family brought dessert, cactus salad and fruit salad. We had more than enough food for everyone, and still enough leftover for our family to take home.

Of course, we do the whole Easter egg hunt too. And figuring out what to put in those little eggs is always a challenge so we stick with loose change, stickers, and jelly beans. We make so many great memories on Easter and I hope that my chiclets will remember our traditions of going to mass, having brunch and doing the egg hunt so they can pass it on to their kids too.

How do you celebrate Easter?

5 Things You Must Do at Knott’s Berry Farm’s Boysenberry Festival

It’s no secret that the Boysenberry Festival is my all-time favorite event of the year at Knott’s Berry Farm (followed very closely by Knott’s Merry Farm). From the delicious boysenberry food treats to the entertainment, Knott’s really ups itself year after year. In 2017, we’re seeing the festival run for three whole weeks, it starts on April 1, 2017 and ends on April 23, 2017. This gives you plenty of time to go back and enjoy the festival at least a few times – don’t forget to pick up those Knott’s season passes to save on the fun!

We enjoyed Knott’s Berry Farm during the first weekend of Boysenberry Festival and we’re giving you our top 5 things you must do at Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival. You won’t see rides on the list, because they come secondary when you see how much there is to do at the park during this time.

Eat everything on the Boysenberry Festival tasting card

For only $25, you can pick up a Boysenberry Festival tasting card that will lead you to six decent sized tastings. Make your way through Ghost Town and pick up all the dishes. Note that the fry bread at the Churro Factory does get a bit long, so hop over to the meatball station next to it first so you can enjoy them while you wait in line.

The fry bread is super messy, so careful with the clothes. My family super enjoyed all the meat dishes, and the sweet and savory dishes like the panna cotta, fry bread and ravioli were a bit hit with the chiclets. The pizza, I have no doubt, will be a fan favorite, and it’s debuting this year so that’s awesome.

Sit down and enjoy some entertainment

Learn about the history of the boysenberry & Knott’s Berry Farm at what used to be the Ghost Town Museum (across the way from the school house). Pull up a seat and settle in for this fascinating filmed look at how Walter & Cordelia Knott settled right here in Buena Park and helped the world discover the amazing Boysenberry!

Also, across the way from the train station is a big stage that will host special entertainment every day of the festival. There’s also specially planned entertainment in different spots throughout the park (make sure to check out DJ Cruz at Fiesta Village!) so make sure you’re planning ahead so you don’t miss any of your favorites. Oh, and there’s a pie eating contest too. ¡Buena suerte!

Shop for souvenirs and gifts

Shopping is made even more fun with plenty of boysenberry treats that you can bring home with you – including a boysenberry plant! I picked up the cutest hat and the gal spritzed some boysenberry scent on it. It was my favorite takeaway from the day. The kids, on the other hand, couldn’t get enough of the boysenberry popcorn so they brought some of that home with them.

Ghost Town has its streets lined with small business owners who have all worked hard to stock up on cute gifts and foods too, so make sure to check them out. It’s always nice to come home with something different that you know you can’t get any other time at Knott’s Berry Farm.

Take lots of photos

Family pictures take on a new twist during this time because you have pretty scenery to take them up against. I love looking back at our own pictures because the memories that we made at the festival are one of my favorites. Also, it’s super fun to wear something that coordinates with the purple-theme, and because it’s Spring chances are that you won’t have any problem finding something cute (I found my top at TJ Maxx).

Grab a boysenberry drink and enjoy the view

The Wine and Craft Brew Garden at the dance hall has boysenberry beer, boysenberry cider and boysenberry wine. Grab all of those and sit back and enjoy the view at any of the benches or picnic tables throughout Ghost Town. It’s the perfect way to just chill out and relax. Plus, you can get the kids free boysenberry punch at the dance hall too so they can decompress for a bit too. Purchase a tasting card for $25 and you’ll get 6 tastings PLUS a platter of snacks to go with your drinks. Don’t forget to grab a pic of yourself in front of the pretty topiaries before you head out.

There are so many reasons why the Boysenberry Festival is a must-do, but you’ll see that for yourself when you go. Take note that it only goes on for three weeks, so don’t hesitate and pick up your tickets soon! Get there as early as possible to avoid long wait times. Don’t forget to share your pics online using the hashtag #BoysenberryFestival. It’s the official hashtag and I’m following it to see what I missed (because yes, I’m totally going back before it ends). 5 Things You Must Do at SeaWorld San Diego

Thank you to our host SeaWorld for this opportunity.

Last week we visited SeaWorld San Diego for the first time ever. It was an eye-opening experience and although it was a blogger trip, I was happy to know that I could go back at any time and have the same experience. These are the 5 things you must do at SeaWorld San Diego for a full day of fun, learning, play and new experiences.

5 Things You Must Do at SeaWorld San Diego

SeaWorld Behind-the-Scenes Tour

The SeaWorld Behind-the-Scenes Tour takes you where all the action happens. This is where you see where you see how SeaWorld rescues and rehabilitates marine and terrestrial animals that are ill, injured, orphaned or abandoned, with the goal of returning them to the wild. The SeaWorld rescue team has helped more than 29,000 animals in need over the last 50 years and while we were there, we saw a couple of sea lions that were being rehabilitated. This tour will take visitors to meet with a variety of team members that will share what SeaWorld does to help the many animals from the sea, and also how we can help the animals as well. There will be lots of reminders to pick up after yourself at parks, the dangers of letting balloons and plastic bags go up into the air, and the dangers that dumping into the ocean has on these poor animals. You’ll hear some heartbreaking stories of animals that were injured by things that could have been avoided. The tour will also give you a glimpse into what it takes to run SeaWorld and you’ll see why some of the team members have been a part of SeaWorld for over 10 years. The SeaWorld Behind-the-Scenes Tour is definitely and eye opening experience… and the kids will love it!

Cost: Starting at $20

Dolphin Encounter

The Dolphin Encounter allows you to touch and feed bottlenose dolphins and learn hand signals used to communicate with them. It’s a really interactive experience so be prepared to touch and play with dolphins. During the encounter, a knowledgeable trainer will bring you close to dolphins without you having to get into the water. The kids will love giving commands to the dolphins, feeding them, and the family picture at the end of the encounter is everything.

Cost: Starting at $65

Dine with Shamu

Make a reservation before you get to the park (or while you’re there if it’s not too busy) and have lunch sitting down next to where the orcas perform. Dine with Shamu gets the opportunity to see the trainers play and feed them before the show begins. The kids also got a chance to throw snowballs to the orcas so they could munch on them. The entire experience is about an hour long, with the Shamu show being about 17 minutes long. Lunch is buffet-style and it remains open the entire show. Major bonus? The restaurants serve seafood that is sustainable, and organic and locally sourced. It’s delicious!

Cost: Starting from $40 for adults and $20 for children ages 3-9

Shark Encounter

Shark encounter is a free experience available at the park during normal operating hours. You’ll get to journey through an amazing underwater viewing tunnel (my favorite part). Before you go through the tunnel, you’ll get an up close experience with the sharks as you see them swimming around in giant tanks. It’s amazing, especially if you consider that these predators were in the sea more than a hundred million years before dinosaurs walked the earth.

We had an amazing time at SeaWorld San Diego and we’re looking forward to going back next year to enjoy Orca Encounter, Ocean Explorer and Electric Ocean. Orca Encounter will be a live documentary-style presentation helping park guests gain a deeper appreciation and respect for the orcas, and empowering them to preserve the future of these majestic animals. Ocean Explorer will combine multiple aquariums, exciting rides and digital technologies designed to engage park guests in an experience centered on exploration and adventure. Finally, Electric Ocean will transform the park into an underwater world of colorful luminescence. There’s so much happening that another trip back is definitely in the cards. And if you’re visiting the park, we hope that these 5 things to do at SeaWorld San Diego will help you plan your visit.
