Oral Health Month kick-off at Plaza Mexico

We had a full weekend, and it all started with a visit to Los Angeles’s Plaza Mexico on Saturday. We stopped by to celebrate Colgate-Palmolive’s Oral Health Month campaign kick-off event, in partnership with the Hispanic Dental Association.

We spent the morning visiting the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures® mobile dental van that was on-site to provide bilingual learning materials and free dental screenings to children. In all honesty, it’s been a minute since I’ve taken the kids to the dentist, and our free dental screening was not only a reminder to take them into the dentist, but also a wake-up call because we found out that my youngest has a cavity!!! Not good.

The volunteer dentists on staff were so nice. They’ve clearly worked with kids before, and it showed. Kids that went in for their dental screening inside their 32-feet long mobile dental van were put at ease by watching cartoons featuring Colgate characters in the form of super heroes. They also had friendly visuals that helped to create a fun and less intimidating ‘screening experience.’ Best of all, the screening only lasted a few minutes! Long enough for the volunteer dentists to do a dental check-up and provide us with a overview of what is going on in our kids’ mouths.

Because the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures van is equipped with two stations, both my boys were able to get seen at the same time. Once they were done with their screening, they got a backpack filled with learning materials that include a tube of Colgate kid’s toothpaste, a Colgate kid’s toothbrush, brushing instructions as well as a cute toy.

We stopped to check out the fun stations outside the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures® mobile dental van and chatted with the other volunteers. Everyone was super friendly and answered any questions that we had. The kids, of course, just wanted to hang out some more and watch the cartoons playing in the background.

Once we were done with all the dental stuff, it was time for some fun. We headed deeper into Plaza Mexico where we anxiously waited for a fun surprise as we shopped all the little kiosks filled with products brought straight from Mexico. We listened to music and giveaways from local radio station, KLVE 107.5 (our favorite Spanish radio station). Around noon, the surprised arrived. Or rather, the surprise played! A mariachi flash mob made up of 40 mariachis plus dancers and singers spread throughout Plaza Mexico and serenaded the crowd.

We had such an incredibly Saturday morning, and la cultura that was present throughout the event made my family so happy. Colgate managed to make dental screenings fun and educational! They helped raise awareness about the importance of a healthy smile in a very family-friendly style. We left with a smile, and a reminder to make an appointment with our dentist.
