DIY Minecraft Birthday Party at Sky High Sports – The Trampoline Place

When my son turned six years old we celebrated the way he asked – with a Minecraft birthday party at Sky High Sports in Costa Mesa, California, surrounded by his classmates and his family. Throwing a Minecraft birthday party was no easy task thanks to the limited supply of toys, weapons and non-existant birthday decorations – but we did the best we could. Celebrating his special day at Sky High Sports was perfect because it allowed him and his friends and family to go through all their excess energy and basically go crazy for two hours, and saving me from all the clean-up afterwards!

It all started with the invitations. I used Minecraft images I found online by searching “Minecraft blocks” and created invitations that I wrapped around socks and handed them out to the kids in his class. They were a hit! However, if you’re hosting a Sky High Sports party without a theme, check out their FREE printable birthday invitations. Instructions for the waiver that the jumpers need to sign is also on their site.

When I first reserved Sky High Sports for my son’s birthday party I told them 30 kids – just to be safe. My son has 20 kids with him in his kindergarten class and we figured 10 more for family. Well… everyone showed up!

We set up the party room with long rectangular tables, one up against the other, and covered them with black tablecloths. For table decorations, we added Minecraft building blocks that we purchased from Toys ‘R Us because we figured that the kids would barely notice decorations with pizza and drinks in their faces. We were right. However, we did buy a dozen black and green balloons – because we all know how much kids love balloons, right?

We arrived about 30 minutes before “show time” and everything was ready on time. Noah, our Sky High Sports party coordinator, was absolutely fantastic. ¡Fantastico!

One of the best parts about this easy-peasy birthday party was being able to bring in my own food. My bestie, Jill of PopsicleBlog.com, went to Costco and purchased a bunch of snacks that the kids could fill up on in between bounce runs and a carrot cake – just in case.

When guests came to the party room, they were greeted with this sign that made my kid’s day. How sweet, right?

So the kids sign in, submit their waivers, take off their socks and head for the jumping zones. We celebrated on a Friday night at 6 p.m. and I think it was the perfect time. We had so much space for all the kids to jump and go crazy.

The kids seem to gravitate to their biggest jumping zone first. It was super popular, but the staff on hand was prepared. They kept a great eye on all the kids and we are happy to report – no broken bones!

Simple up and down jumping is fun. But then the kids tried to do all these fancy tricks and I loved how they weren’t deferred by the fact that this was their first time jumping. It was so great to see the confidence in the kids as they attempted to do back flips, hand stands, cartwheels, etcetera.

In the end, even the adults got in on the fun. That long-haired gal right there in the picture? That’s our frugal writer, Justine! I think she had as much fun as the kids (maybe even more).

The foam pit was also a lot of fun. My two and a half year old did his best to keep up with the big kids. Not bad considering that it was his first time going into the pit. He played it safe by crawling down into it, and the Sky High Sports staff helped him climb out. This one the kids had to wait in line for, but it went by fairly quick.

After one and a half hours of jumping, the kids came back to the party room for food, drinks and dessert. Sky High Sports provided all the utensils and tableware too. Noah, the party assistant, had been hard at work at the room while the kids played so that when the kids came back, the party tables were ready for them. Each had a plate and utensils, and they were given the option of drinking punch, soda or water. The only thing I missed bringing what some type of music player. But honestly, they kids probably wouldn’t have heard it anyway. They were going locos in the room!

And just to give you an idea of what a budget Minecraft cake looks like, here you go. We pre-ordered a tres leches cake from my favorite bakery – Tlaxcala Bakery in Santa Ana, and had them do a basic green airbrushing on top and brown on the sides. Hubster went to Target and purchased a few Minecraft characters to go on top, black candles and I used the package from the other Minecraft play sets to top it off. I surrounded the cake with the Minecraft playlets and listo – Minecraft cake.

When the pizza arrived, it came in a black cart. The pizzas were d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s!!! Really. I mean, you usually go to parties and you expect the pizzas to taste like cardboard. Not these. These tasted like they just came out of the oven – soft and full of cheesy goodness.

And finally, everyone went home happy with a goody bag in hand. I purchased black lunch bags and used the same idea of the Minecraft stickers that I had made for the invitations and sealed the bag with those. I stuffed the goody bags with a juice box, fruit snacks, stickers, tattoos, little trinkets, etcetera.

It was great to see everyone gathered at Sky High Sports to celebrate my kid’s sixth birthday. Months later, he’s still talking about it. Total success.
