HOME: film review

The kids and I recently attended the HOME purple carpet movie premiere in Los Angeles. I was thrilled to catch a glimpse of the star-studded cast including Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Steve Martin; but of course, the children were more excited to grab their seats and watch HOME – a film based on a children’s book, “The True Meaning of Smekday.”

HOME film review

My children have been watching the movie trailers and they have been dying to see the alien’s dance moves and his famous line “my hands are in the air like I just do not care.” They’ve had that hook stuck in their head since they saw the movie trailer and to see the movie made their day.

HOME really hit home for us, pardon the pun. I felt the movie conveyed positive messages for children, such as facing your fears and having hope. My children absolutely fell in love with the movie and the characters “Tip” played by the beautiful Rihanna and “Oh” played by the funny, Jim Parsons.

The movie is filled with comedy and touching moments. There wasn’t a dull moment throughout the movie. The alien “Oh” captures the essence of how people should be and his race represents the society that we live in, so indifferent and de-synthesized.  It really is a great family movie that both adults and children will enjoy.

Besides the lovable humor and fun that the movie portrayed, I absolutely loved the soundtrack.  It has amazing tracks from artists ranging from Rihanna to Jennifer Lopez to Charli XCX. Songs like “Towards the Sun” and “Feel the Light” placed the audience right in the moment to sympathize with the character and what was happening to them.

This movie is a must-see because it is wholesome, modern, and hilarious.  The entire family had a great time watching the film. Catch it in theaters on March 27, 2015.
