Monster trucks return to Anaheim Stadium

Monster truck season is back in Southern California! Yesterday, we had the opportunity to chat with the driver behind the wheel of “Menace,” one of the monster trucks that will race in this weekend’s Monster Jam show.

Monster Trucks at Anaheim Stadium

Menace, a monster truck visually designed by a 16 year old, is driven by Darren Migues who told us that the first time he drove Menace was in a monster truck race in front of hundreds of people. Not a bad way to start a career!

We met up at a local elementary school where Darren talked to other kids and gave them a real-life lesson in engineering and technology. All a part of the school’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum program.  The kids received their own K’Nex Monster Jam truck builder sets to create mini replicas of the two-ton super trucks and then they learned how their version compares to the mechanics of a 10,000 pound real truck.

The driver and “pit crew team” then changed the tires, gave a brief lesson on how the truck is constructed, and even shared a few facts about Menace:

  • Motor: 540
  • Horsepower: 1,400-1,500
  • Tires: 700 lbs. each
  • Size: 15 feet tall
  • Transmission: 2-speed
