Easy ways to make your child’s lunch more special + printable lunch notes

The kids are back in school and my routine is getting a little settled. Now I have the day-to-day to worry about, including the lunch situation. Yes, my kid could easily buy lunch at school, but he’s just starting kindergarten and I don’t want to give him too much to take on. Plus, I’ve been looking forward to him starting school for the past five years, and I’m going to milk it as long as I can.

Of course, if you know anything about me is that I’m not the best cook. And well, calling me a “cook” would be a stretch since my specialities lie in cheese sandwiches and quesadillas. When I’m at the top of my game, he takes to school something that I can take a picture of, like this combo: salad, cutie slices, granola bar, cucumbers and hard-boiled eggs in cute shapes. Mind you, this is not the everyday case.

So anyway, I’ve been focusing my kid’s attention away from my less-than-stellar lunch combinations with little special things that I put in his Star Wars lunchbox like super cute, sweet and funny lunch box notes. Of course, I always look for the semi-home/hand made products so when I discovered that Walmart.com did printable lunch notes, I became a frequent visitor.

Making your own printable lunch box notes is super easy. You simply choose the background, then a character, and finally, a message. The list of messages to choose from is lengthy and will save you from having to come up with your own witty and encouraging lines. It takes me about a minute to create a note and once you print it out, you can also grab your Nesquick coupon to use on your next shopping trip.

Visit Walmart.com to create a note to share with family, friends and loved ones! Even if you only do this once a week, the kids will appreciate your thoughtfulness. While you’re there, check out the “Feel Good Nestle Foods” section at the bottom of the page. Here you can add all your favorite Nestle products to a printable list by clicking “save to list” under the image. Use it so you never run out of lunchbox and family favorites.

After I made my list of my favorite Nestle products (see above), I reached out to some of my local blogger friends and asked them what they did to make their kid’s lunches special. Here are the tips they gave me:

I make sure that the kids give me input on what they like, and I always pack their lunches with love. – Jill, Popsicle Blog.

I write messages on their fruit. – Marcie, Surf City Family
I put in their favorites and personalize their lunches using cookie cutters. I also like to do holiday-themed lunches. – Jennifer, Toddler Trails
I put love notes, even if it’s just a happy face. Sometimes I’ll add in some penny toys. – Kirstin, SoCal Kids Outdoor Adventures
I like to include frozen grapes as a special snack. – Alma, Field Trip Mom
On the days when we’re able to have lunch together at home, I make sure to sit down with them and enjoy lunch with them. – Liz, Family is Familia

What do you do do for your children’s lunches to make them more special?
