Movie Review: Despicable Me 2

Despicable Me 2, an animated comedy from Universal Pictures opening on July 3rd, is the first movie that I’ve seen where the sequel, in my opinion, might even be better than the hysterical original “Despicable Me”.

Starring Steve Carell as Gru and Kristen Wiig as his partner Lucy, the laughs start from the very beginning and continue right through the credits. My 5-year-old never stopped laughing (and never wanted to take a bathroom or food break), a clear indicator (to me, anyway) that the movie holds interest from the smaller set up through adults- I didn’t want to miss a minute of it either. We saw the 3D version, and the effects at some points were so good that my son wanted to go look for minions in the front row- he thought they fell from the movie screen. He was even trying to catch things that seemed to be “flying” through the audience. Given his response to the effects, I think the 3D upgrade is totally worth it.

Without giving anything away, the movie begins with a mysterious villain, life changes for Gru (like new employer the “Anti-Villain League”), and new character introductions. You’ll see familiar faces like Gru’s adopted daughters, Dr. Nefario, and of course the minions (who play a central role in this sequel). This time around, Gru is recruited as a secret agent, on the hunt for a stolen formula and the elusive super-criminal. The minions really steal the show for most of the movie, garnering tons of laughs and keeping the energy of the movie high. Though there are some sequences of mild cartoon action and crude humor – like fart guns- it’s nothing most kids haven’t seen before. There also seemed to be some nods to Steve Carells’ previous works that I appreciated. Overall, it’s a great family film. At 98 minutes, it’s just the right length, especially for families with small children. My kid actually sat still the entire time! When our screening was over, the audience even broke into loud applause and cheers. Also, don’t forget to stay through most of the credits (especially for the 3D version)! The movie isn’t over ‘til it’s over!
